Umibot Chatbot

Umibot, or Umi, is a chatbot designed by a team of feminist researchers at RMIT University and developed in conjunction with the Melbourne-based digital agency, Tundra.

Umibot aims to provide an empathetic and non-judgmental informational tool for Australians and other users seeking help for image-based abuse. The Chatbot is designed to provide a safe space for people to explore their different options and find out more information to help them navigate their experiences.

I designed the visual brand and identity for Umibot. I spent many months working on drawings and  concepts for the face of Umi (in collaboration with the client) before arriving at the final result. 

The client wanted to create a character that clearly indicated an AI-based interaction so users understand they are not interacting with an actual human. However, they also wanted the graphic icon or “face” of the chatbot to impart the key qualities of being intelligent, caring, empathic, supportive and knowing with the aim of establishing trust and empathy with its users. 

Umi is deliberately ambiguous and open to interpretation. From one perspective, Umi takes the form of a robot with an antenna, floating inside a speech bubble. From another, Umibot is a human character wearing a hijab or headscarf, or someone with a bob hairstyle. The purpose of this ambiguity is to convey that Umi is here to speak to everyone.

Meet Me at the Library

Meet Me at the Library is a ten-part podcast and radio series (created by Anne-Marie Middlemast) uncovering the human stories of connection that people make through public libraries. 

The overarching theme of the podcast is connection, with episode themes exploring topics including friendship, isolation, the future, freedom and opportunity. I designed the Podcast art work and marketing material which needed to visually represent the idea of diversity, community and connection.
